What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It covers the four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Who is it for?
IELTS is the
most widely recognised English language qualification in the world. The
test is particularly useful to those looking to demonstrate their
English language ability for higher education, immigration, and
employment (both in the UK and overseas). As the largest open
examination centre in Scotland, Basil Paterson is the perfect place to
take this important test of communicative English ability. We also
offer a dedicated IELTS Preparation course all year round.

The IELTS examination fee is £125 in 2012. A full list of dates is available below; however, please note that these dates may be subject to change, and that you will need to book several weeks in advance to guarantee a place on the exam, as spaces fill up extremely quickly.
If there are no places available on the date you require, visit http://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/ for a list of alternative centres. Basil Paterson does not operate a waiting list sytem, so please ensure you leave plenty of time to reserve your place.

Please note:
- Dates in bold are both Academic and General Training test dates. Dates not in bold are Academic only.
- These dates may be subject to change, and places fill up extremely quickly.
- To ensure there is space on your preferred testing date, please phone us.
- You must bring the ID you used in your application with you on the day of your exam. Acceptable identification can be either a valid passport or, if you come from inside the EU, an EU identity card.
- During the summer months your interview may not be on the same day as the written papers. If you live outside of Edinburgh, we will do our best to arrange your interview on the same day.
- Each candidate is permitted to request up to 5 result certificates (TRFs) to be sent to various institutions for free. These should be written on page 3 of your application form. If you contact us after tha TRFs have been issued, or if you wish to send more than 5 copies, a charge of £15 applies.
IELTS practice materials
Copies of official IELTS practice materials with DVD and sample answers are available from £10 excluding postage (add £2 for UK, or £5 overseas). Please send a cheque made payable to Basil Paterson College if you require these materials.

How to apply
Visit the ORS site and follow the onscreen instructions
- Your application must be completed online in full. You will then be given instructions about submitting the following:
a. 2 passport-sized photos
b. photocopy of your ID
c. your test fee payment
To pay by debit/credit card, fill out this form and post it to Basil Paterson College
- You can also pay at the school reception (Mon to Fri 9.00-5.30)
- DO NOT SEND CASH BY POST
Transfer/ Refunds
- To arrange a test date transfer or refund, a Transfer/Refund Form must be submitted either electronically or by post to the address given below.
- There is a £25 admin fee for any transfer or cancellation. Transfers or Cancellations can only be made more than 5 weeks before the original test date.
- If you miss your exam due to family bereavement or serious illness, a full refund will be given. Documentation must be provided along with a Transfer/Refund Form.

Your results
Candidates results will be produced 13 days after the exam date. They can be viewed online after this time and the official test report will be posted out to you. We cannot email, fax, or tell someone the results over the telephone.
Important information
- You must bring the same identity document with you on the day of your exam as you used in your application. You will not be allowed to take the exam without it
