Applying for a CELTA course

Entry requirements

All applicants should:

  • be over 20 years of age (or 18, at the tutor's discretion)
  • have a standard of education that will allow you to enter university
  • have a good awareness of language and competence in written and spoken English
  • have a passion for learning, and be open to new ideas and techniques

Previous teaching experience is not required, although some applicants do already have EFL teaching experience and wish to consolidate their existing knowledge to gain a recognised qualification.

Please Note: The recommended candidate language level for non-native speakers is C2 (Cambridge Proficiency) or high C1 (Cambridge Advanced) - Grade A or B on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Non-EU residents will be required to own a Student Visa in order to be accepted onto their course.

How to apply

To apply for Basil Paterson's CELTA course, all you need to do is the following:

  • Download an application form here
  • Make sure you enclose a passport-sized photo of yourself
  • Enclose photocopies of all relevant qualifications
  • Include a handwritten essay of about 250 words answering the question: What are the qualities and skills that would make you an effective language teacher?
  • Send all correspondence to CELTA Course Coordinator, using the address on the right

Before being accepted, all candidates are interviewed to assess their suitability for the course. These interviews usually take place in groups (or over the phone if you can't make it into the school), and comprise various language awareness tasks, teaching a short lesson, and group feedback. In most cases, the decision to accept or reject a candidate is made immediately. Once accepted, please pay the course fees by cheque (made payable to Basil Paterson College), credit card, or in person at the College reception.
